Three reasons we love desiccated coconut

Throughout May we’re been celebrating the delicious taste and versatility of our organic desiccated coconut. You’re probably already familiar with desiccated coconut and may already use it in your cooking or baking but do you actually know what it is and how it’s made?

In a nutshell (pun very much intended!), desiccated coconut is dried out and grated coconut flesh. It is made by grating the white, mature coconut flesh finely before drying it out. It retains about 3% of the coconut’s moisture but is dry to the touch and taste.

So why have we made it our product of the month…here’s our top three reasons why we love it so:

  1. It’s high in fibre. Desiccated coconut is high in fibre containing 16g per 100g. The fibre in coconut can play an important role in reducing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. Fibre is also an essential nutrient for the normal functioning of the gut.
  1. It’s 100% natural. Our desiccated coconut contains nothing but delicious organic coconut. It contains no added sulphites and no artificial additives, so just pure coconut goodness.
  1. It’s versatile. Desiccated coconut makes for a great ingredient and topping for porridge and cakes, as well as for savoury dishes too. Try combining with chocolate in our Vegan Chocolate & Coconut Cake or give the traditional Bakewell Tart a revamp in this Coconut Bakewell Tart For a sweet boost to savoury dishes try it in our Coconut Prawn & Bean Salad or Coconut & Prawn Soup. The list in endless! Check out some more of our favourite ways to use desiccated coconut on our recipe page here.

FUN FACT: Did you know the coconut is technically a fruit and a nut! Despite its name, coconuts are the fruit of the coconut palm plant (technically known as Cocos Nucifera).

Our deliciously organic desiccated coconut is part of our organic baking range.
